ID:	5158Rituals have been lost somewhat in our busy lifestyles today. They had great significance in the past and served to pour our devotion, intention and energy to manifest beneficial outcomes, gain insight or express messages that must come through our body and mind for digestion to allow a transformation to occur.

That’s why I love using teatime to create an Ayurvedic healing ritual. If I have an uneasy mind or a body at dis-ease I will always turn to my teapot for answers and do the same if a friend or client requires guidance or comfort. I’d like to share with you a simple Ayurveda tea ritual that always brings new light to a stagnant situation. You don’t need to be of any religion or repeat a mantra or prayer (unless you want to), you simply need to be present and respect the ingredients for the power they hold and give them space to do their thing. You can use this ritual for mindful eating too. It’s known as the 5-senses contact ritual and is perfect for Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas equally. To learn more about your dosha visit

With the 5-senses ritual you will:

Look at your ingredients – do they please you? Are you indifferent to them?

Touch your ingredients – are they crunchy or soft?

Smell your ingredients – are they sweet or pungent? Do they bring back a memory?

Listen to your ingredients – do they crackle, squeak? Etc.

Observe what you’re thinking throughout the process – is your mind on the tea?

Start your healing teatime ritual with Ayurveda’s famous masala chai:

2.5 cups water

1.5 cups raw milk

2tblsp black tea (optional)

˝ inch ginger

3 whole cloves

1 cinnamon stick,

2 cardamom pods

Fresh ground black pepper

1tsp turmeric,

1-2 tsp jaggery, honey or your favourite sweetener (also optional).

I highly recommend you use organic ingredients.

Bring water and spices to boil. Add tea and boil for 2 more minutes. Then add the milk and simmer on low, pay great attention at this stage as it can over boil. Check in with yourself and your thoughts and make sure you are aware what you are stirring into the chai with your energy and thoughts. This medicinal tea serves to stoke your digestive fire (agni) so you can not only digest your food better but also digest your emotions, feelings and the stimuli in your environment more easily.

The pungent herbs like ginger, cloves, turmeric and black pepper are essential for good digestion. Adding black pepper with turmeric makes the curcumin in turmeric 2000% more bioavailable to your body. Just 1tsp of cinnamon a day helps to regulate blood sugar and the cardamom pods help reduce the mucous effect of the milk and also mitigate the acidic affects of caffeine in your chai. Have you tried cardamom pods in your coffee yet? It’s delicious!

You can always experiment to your liking and needs too. If caffeine doesn’t suit you try a herbal tea like dandelion or lemongrass. If you are yerba mate fan add that instead. If you need more cooling qualities rather than heating try adding fennel seeds, rose buds and vanilla as an alternative, especially for Pitta (fire) doshas.

Once the tea has been poured and you are seated, check to see if you can once again use the 5-sense ritual while seated (note that touching here can also be tasting, however if you want to test the temperature with your finger that’s fine too.)

This entire process helps to slow you down and bring you back into your body. It gives you the opportunity to offer yourself love and care; after all it is nobody else’s responsibility but your own to be mindful of your health. A little attention today will serve you immensely in the days that follow.
