Panchakarma is a set of five therapies designed mainly for cleansing the body of toxins. Ayurveda considers that the purification of the body is important before the commencement of any other therapy. Just such as old dirty linen is washed and purified before new colour can be added, similarly the body needs to be purified before replenishing it with the new colours of health, youthfulness, vigour and vitality.

What does Panchakarma Treatment consists of exactly?

Panchakarma means (Pancha = Penta = Five + Karma = Actions / Procedures). It is a complete cleansing process through five different procedures that eliminates the toxins from the body.

    Panchakarma Treatment comprises of :
Preparatory Process : These help in preparing the body for the purification process.
These include treatments like external oil massages, kiizhi (medicated bolus) etc with internal administrations. This helps in preparing the person for main course of Panchakarma.

Main Treatment Process : There are 5 detoxification procedures namely
    Vamana (Induced Vomiting) ,
    Virechana (Purgation) ,
    Kashaya Vasti (Medicated decoction enema)
    Sneha Vasti (Medicated Oil enema)
    Nasyam (Nasal Instillation)
The suitable procedure / procedures are decided by the treating physician according to individual conditions.

    Rejuvenative process :
As the concluding part of the course, various rejuvenative medicines and procedures are prescribed to improve the health and restore the equilibrium of the body.
We can do very mild detox within a week. But Ideally a Panchakarma course would take about 2 weeks. And it is best to be followed by rejuvenation.

    What is Panchkarma?

Panchakarma is an effective natural body detoxification treatment described in Ayurveda. As the name suggests Panchakarma mainly is performed using five important Ayurvedic therapies such as vaman, virechanam, nasyam, basti and rakta mokshan. However, based on individual health status and needs, one might need lesser therapies for complete body detoxification. Panchakrma is recommended to be done from time to time to cleanse the body and remove unwanted toxins. This improves physiological functions and also rejuvenates the body. Panchakarma is recommended for both healthy as well as diseases person. In healthy person it helps to restore the physiological balance where as in case of diseases person it helps to correct the underlying pathology of a disease.
The five therapies in panchakarma include,

    1. Vaman
This is induced vomiting. The treatment begins with intake of medicated ghee in increased doses for about 5 to 7 days. After analysis by Ayurvedic doctor, vomitting is induced which helps to get rid of vitiated vatas from the body.

    2. Virechanam
The process is similar to vaman, however it ends with induced purgation. In both vaman and virechanam, the induction of emesis or purgation is decided by the doctor. Some people may need lesser doses of medicated ghee based on the physical condition and health status.

    3. Nasyam
This treatment includes administration of medicated oil, herbal extracts or powders through nasal cavity. As per Ayurvedic theory, nasal cavity is the doorway to brain. The medications instilled in nasal cavity clear the nasal blockages and also mucous deposition. This further rejuvenates mental health.

    4. Basti
Basti refer to Ayurvedic enemas. It can be either sneha basti that uses medicated oils or kasaya basti that uses herbal decoction for enemas. The basti procedure completes cleanses the colon to get rid of unwanted gases and toxins accumulated over time.

    5. Rakta Mokshan
This refers to bloodletting therapies. Raktamoksha is performed to eliminate the toxins from the bloodstream. This procedure is contracted in episodes of anemia, weakness, in young children, older patient, during pregnancy and during menstruation.
