The word Yoga is derived from Sanskrit root “Yuj” meaning to unite, join, bind, attach, harness, contact or to connect and to yoke.
Philosophically Yoga indicates that it is the union between inner self with Universal self.

Medically Yoga is intended to harmonize the all systems of body. Specifically neurology, endocrines, musculoskeletal system, gastro intestinal tract, and most emphasis on respiratory system.

Now a day the yoga is described as part of Hatha Yoga.

Eight steps are the theory but Patanjali’s yoga is unexplained and that is the philosophical part of Yoga Science.

Hidden secrets of yoga are there.

Principles of Yoga

Patanjali’s Eight Principles of Yoga

Abstinence/ self restraint/self discipline (Yama)

Observance/execution (Niyama)

Posture/attitude as suggested (Asana)

Regulation of breath according to yoga guideline(Pranayama)

Withdrawal of Senses (Pratyahara)

Concentration (Dharana)

Meditation (Dhyana)

Super Consciousness (Samadhi)

Correct relaxation of body and affirmative attitude of thinking plus suitable exercise and mindful breathing with Ayurveda and Yoga suggested diet and lifestyle transforms the person and personality both.

All the steps are leading to the best health.

First two are ethical which support the man and humanity both by its commandments universally. They are to give eternal, timeless divinity and peace to concern with any religion.

All the eight steps are concerned with health but I am to focus here only two steps mainly those are Asanas and Pranayama.

General understanding of each step is here.

(i)Yama : There are five restraints as follows

1.Ahimsa: that is non-violence; true non-violence is love which gives calmness. When anxiety and such type of depressive symptoms are the causes of dis-ease and that dis- ease leads to ailments. Absence of ahimsa (true love) is essential to live peacefully. Harmony happens within all neurons due to continuous feeling of non violence.

2.Satya that is truth. Truth is the ultimate search and achievement. When truth is there in the inner of person will support him and that support will work like immunity. The disturbance of mind starts with untruth and we know that the root of acquired diseases is mind. That is why Yoga states about the truth.

3.Asteya that is non-stealing; to have something which is not ours is the prime cause of unhappiness, we all know that unhappiness. Unhappiness is also disease itself.

4.Aparigrah that is non- possessiveness ; unnecessary possession of anything requires more instruments to manage internally and externally both including time and stress. If you have read up to this line, I will not explain details because you are sure of this.

5. Brahmcharya that incontinence or celibacy as because of religious vows, one may take as general rule for health and prevention of disease that sexual deeds must be attended at certain age and understanding. Yoga does not oppose this activity at all. There are certain laws for Yogis and the married person and students. Consult Yoga and Ayurvedic texts.

(ii)Niyama: There are five observances to follow

1.Sauch that is purity; purity is the main virtue for man and society both as well as for the diseased person. Absence of purity invites infection to the body and minds both. If the thoughts are not pure and good, one will behave which will not proper for the society that is why the purity of mind is essential for good society. Impurity by all means is invitation to the disease, epidemic and endemic.

2.Santosh that is contentment; contentment is the final art to be happy. If we eat without contentment will punish our stomach and digestion. Living without contentment/ satisfaction leads our brain to have unhappy life because we never get good sleep. Good sleep is the fifty percent cure of disease in general. Sleep is the main factor for natural recovery. Wait for the datas.

3. Tapas that is trans formative spiritual process; as we heat the metal to reform, Tapas is essential who wish to achieve something. If we want good health, we are suppose to have Tapas that is hard work with body and mind both otherwise we are to loose more and more. All the yoga suggested actions gradually leads us normal metabolism and pure state of physiology.

4. Swadhyay that is a regular process to digest the principles of spirituality internally; a deep study and then the digestion of information and knowledge both with proper application of that knowledge to get the result suggested. Regular repetition of regularly regular performed activity makes master and only master can achieve something.

5. Iswar Pranidhan that is dedication of all to the god; to accept the universal constitution and to work for it is the simplest way to live egoless and to live without ego is the most difficult task to perform but who wish to live with own religion must try to live in this way.

These commandments are Niyama. Both, Yama and Niyama may be the moral virtues of a person. These give internal peace of mind, which leads directly to the mental health which is the root cause of health.

(iii) Asanas;

The third step of Yoga is directly related to the body. Here is something to perform. There are too many postures to get the body kinetic and to get good health. For the health one must perform these all very cautiously under supervision or advice. Certain postures described in yoga tend to make the balance of body and mind and inspires physiology to continue normally and pathology to be treated gradually without drugs. It can happen because the body and internal organs are getting the force from certain postures with strange laws of Yoga. Asanas are so complex but very simple after some practice. The yoga had understood the human body and its mechanism. It is a collection of observations of the human, animal, birds and nature from thousands of years with its classical collection and results.

A general opinion about Yoga and Asanas is the exercise for the body but it is not true. Yoga is not just exercise it is more than that. Yoga has concrete relation with endocrines and neurology and Anatomy. All the functions under Yoga performing disciple who can produce amazing magnetic and spiritual power. A disciple of yoga could have power, which is unbelievable, but here that is not concerned.

Whenever needful, The Yoga will be advised as per the requirement of diseased person. I do not suggest any general formula for all diseased.

PRNAYAMA;

Prana (breathing air or oxygen) is the factor which makes the man alive.

Prana conducts most metabolic process. As we know, the metabolism is the process making (anabolism) and destroying (catabolism). Anabolism plus catabolism is equal to metabolism. Mal metabolites are the root cause of disturbed physiology, which inspires pathology to produce signs or symptoms. This is the disease. When one analyze this, he can prescribe the treatment. Thus Prana is the main factor (agni/ fire). Yoga suggests such exercise for prana as inspiration, expiration and holding of breath in time proportion.

This must not be applied to anybody without understanding of yoga or prescription because it can harm the body. It can imbalance mind too!

Yoga teaches the special techniques to take breath as constitution suggest.

This may be different from person to person. One should not perform Pranayama directly from any book. Because it is internal power generating activity.

Of course, one can practice yoga as routine exercise purpose but when one is diseased or disciple, he is advised not perform Yoga without consultation of any proper person.

Rest four steps Pratyahara, Dhyan, Dharna and Samadhi are there for Yoga disciple. Those steps are not directly concerned with diseased.

There are so many, so called masters and techniques for general use for so

called meditation. it’s o.k.

Medicine maintains the body, Yoga transform the body gradually and decisively.

To the point, I would say, the eight steps of Yoga helps for health purpose as Yama plus Niyama prevents the person from acquired diseases. Asanas and pranayam strengthen the mind and body internally as well as externally. Dharna and the process of Dhyan (meditation) generate the internal power and develops the personality and the last step Samadhi gives endless joy. In this way Yoga helps the human as Yoga is freedom from pain and sorrow of each type.
