Endometriosis is a disease which is common amongst the women. This is a disease of female reproductive system. It is a disorder in which endometrial cells that are normally found inside the uterus are found growing outside the uterus. Normally these are the cells that shed every month during menstruation. These cells usually grow outside the uterus on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, vagina, urinary bladder or intestines called as implants. These implants follow the menstrual cycle under the influence of hormonal changes. This means the tissue will grow, thicken and breakdown. Over time it will have nowhere to exit and become trapped. This causes irritation and formation of scar tissues.

Retrograde menstruation is the major cause of endometriosis. In this, menstrual blood containing endometrial cells flows back through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvic cavity instead of out of the body. These cells stick to the pelvic walls and surfaces of pelvic organs, where they grow and continue to thicken and bleed over the course of each menstrual cycle.

Embryonic cells generate the cells lining the abdominal and pelvic cavities. When one or more small areas of the abdominal lining turn into endometrial tissue, endometriosis can develop.

Lymphatic system may transport endometrial cells to other parts of the body.

Defective immune system may lead to endometriosis.

Endometrial cells may implant in the abdominal cavity due to to incisions by same instruments in different parts of body during abdominal surgery.
