Liver is one of the vital organs of humans. Its function is to metabolize, or breakdown nutrients from food to produce energy, when need. It helps body to fight infection by removing bacteria from the blood. It produces most of the substances that regulate blood clotting. It produces bile, a compound needed to digest fat and to absorb vitamins A, D, E and K. It produces most proteins needed by the body. It prevents shortages of nutrients by storing vitamins, minerals and sugar. It removes potentially toxic by products of certain medications.

fatty liver is a condition in which liver has more fat than 5-10 percent of the liverís weight. This accumulated fat hinders in the normal working of the liver. Fatty liver is one of the common conditions occurring throughout the world. Liver problems are mostly related to consumption of alcohol. But it is not true even people who do not take alcohol at all also suffer from the liver problems.

There are two main types of fatty liver

1. Alcoholic fatty liver disease- It can occur from drinking moderate and large amounts of alcohol

2. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) - It can occur to people who are obese, have diabetes, have high levels of triglycerides or LDL cholesterol or have high blood pressure. It is more common in men that in women.

Fat in liver is not harmful but if it leads to inflammation and scarring of liver it can become life threatening. It is called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) if it is not caused due to drinking of alcohol. If inflammation and scarring is due to consumption of alcohol it is called alcoholic hepatitis. Further damaging can cause liver cirrhosis or liver cancer.
