Cold is the most common diseases which attack people of basically all age groups.  Although it seems to be a small disease, it is quite devastating because of it a communicable disease. A healthy person can easily get affected if exposed to even a small sneeze of the infected person.

At home, we always get natural remedies from our mother or grandmother for curing diseases which they might have learned from their mothers’. The method which they use involves usage of home remedies which is easily available in our homes in the warehouse called as ‘kitchen’.

Well, the first thing to lead a healthy lifestyle is by ensuring a healthy body and a healthy mind.  So, in order to allow Ayurveda to work efficiently, properly balanced diet is necessary. When old-fashioned remedies are blended with a properly balanced diet, the disease can easily be prevented and cured. So, one must ensure taking rest as much as possible and eat simple and easily digestible foods like oatmeal, homemade soups, etc. Foods which are heavy in sense of the digestion process must be avoided so as to keep the body free and healthy.

Here are a few home remedies which can help you fight the common cold:-

  • Tulsi, Turmeric, and Ginger Tea: The tea prepared by blending these three ingredients can help you fight illnesses like fever, sore throat, nausea, code or the bad flu. This potent tea is greatly helpful in preventing as well as treating an already attacked sickness. One needs to drink this tea nearly 3 times a day at intervals of 3-4 hours. Usage of small amount honey as sweetening product is recommended.
  • Clove and Cardamoms: Chewing a bud of clove or two cardamoms or few raisins can help you to fight a sore throat.
  • Ginger-Honey paste: Usage of one-fourth table teaspoon of ginger powder mixed with half a teaspoon of turmeric powder blended with one spoon of honey as in a paste can help you get rid of a bad cold. It is most ideal if consumed twice a day especially in the early morning before breakfast.
  • Garlic Soup: Garlic contains good antiseptic properties which help the immune system fight with common cold and flu. Boiling 3-6 cloves of garlic in a cup of water and drinking it like a soup can help the body in fighting the cold.
  • Black Pepper: Runny or stuffed up noses can be easily treated with consuming pepper in a meal or gargling in hot water or even just by smelling it. Pepper helps in breaking apart congestion in the lungs or sinuses.

Concept of Madhura Rasa (Sweet taste) in Ayurveda

“Rasa” term is used for various aspects in Ayurvedic literature. In Ayurvedic Pharmacology, the term “Rasa” means “Taste”. In general “taste” means the flavor through which we experience our food but, in Ayurveda “Taste” has a far deeper significance. It is one of the unique concepts in Ayurveda.  Ancient Ayurvedic Practitioners scientifically studied and researched about each Rasa and used them for treating diseases and maintaining health of body.

1)    Madhra  Rasa (Sweet Taste)- 
Madhura rasa or Sweet taste is composed of two bio elements – Prithvi (Earth) and Jala (Water)

Urticaria or Hives are raised itchy rashes which occur due to skin reaction. In this article learn about these mysterious Rashes that often appear out of nowhere.

Urticaria also known as hives, weals or nettle rash is one of the most common dermatological disorder. Typical urticarial rash consists of  raised  well circumscribed reddish Rash with severe itching. Sometimes they may even be associated with burning sensation and pain . They can appear anywhere on the body like face, arms, legs, lips, tongue, throat,etc. sometimes these Rashes join together to form Plaques. These Rashes are generally not fatal but in rare circumstances swelling of the tongue and throat (Angioedema) may block the airway which can be life threatening.
Typical urticarial rash lasts from 24 hrs to upto 2 days .sometimes it may extend upto weeks
Urticaria which lasts for less than 6 weeks is called as Acute urticaria.
Urticaria  when recurrently persists for more than 6 weeks is called as Chronic urticaria.
Causes of Urticaria include insect bites, allergy to certain foods like nuts, chocolate,milk, eggs, tomatoes,etc, certain drugs intake like aspirin, ibuprofen, etc, exposure to heat or cold, exercise, after sweating,  pressure on skin, vibration, as a consequence of chronic disease like hypothyroidism, hepatitis or cancer, hereditary , without any known cause.
The causative factors result in immune reaction of body . The antibodies which are concerned with allergic reaction (IgE) activate a specific kind of white cells in body known as Mast cells. These cells on activation release powerful chemical mediators like histamine, cytokines, leukotrienes, Heparin in the dermis which cause dilatation of blood vessels and leaking of fluid from the capillaries below the skin leading to the urticarial Rash.

In Ayurveda a disease mentioned as Sheeta pitta  explains  same clinical features as of Urticaria. Sheeta – means cold which is main characteristic of Vata Dosha and Kapha dosha.  Vata and Kapha dosha on combining with Pitta Dosha cause the disease therefore it  is called as Sheeta pitta.
Causes according to different Ayurvedic texts can be summarized as below:
1.    Exposure to cold environment
2.    Suppressing the urge of Vomiting
3.    Improper emesis (Vamana Karma)
4.    Intake of incompatible diet or food which are allergic to the body
5.    Sudden exposure to cold and heat alternatively
6.    Insect bite or skin contact with poisonous insects or bugs

The causative factors lead to aggravation of Vata Dosha and kapha dosha . These both doshas get combined with Pitta Dosha present in blood tissue (Rakta Dhatu) and on Skin (Twacha) producing rashes with itching and pricking sensation manifesting as Sheeta pitta.
Pitta Dosha here can be correlated to activation of Mast cells and release of inflammatory mediators like histamine. Vata Dosha can be related to chemical messengers which start the process of immune reaction in body after the intake of causative factors. Kapha Dosha can be correlated to Antibodies IgE and IgG which activate the mast cells. Thus, Vata,Kapha and Piita dosha combine altogether to produce urticaria in body.

Prodromal Symptoms
1.    Excessive Thirst (pipasa)
2.    Tastelessness (aruchi)
3.    Nausea (hrillasa)
4.    fatigue (dehasada)
5.    Heaviness of the body (anga gaurava)

In previous blogs we have explained the functions of Vata,Pitta and Kapha Dosha in body. Today in this article learn how these three doshas are responsible for forming physical and mental constitution of body.

Prakriti as explained in Ayurveda is a characteristic nature of individual which is determined right at the time of conception in mother’s womb.  It forms the basic constitution of body and mind through unique combination of Vata, Pitta and Kapha Doshas. As we grow we develop our skills, understanding and personality but prakriti cannot be changed during lifetime.
The factors which determine the Prakriti of fetus are:-
1. Prakriti of Sperm
2. Prakriti of Ovum
3. Predominant Dosha in Uterus
4. Time and season of Conception
5. Diet and lifestyle of Pregnant mother

The Dominant Dosha involved in above mentioned factors lead to formation of unique Prakriti of individual.
Prakriti  is of two types
1) Sharirik (Physical ) Prakriti
2) Mansik (Psychological) Prakriti


Such individuals generally have lean and thin body, they tend to lose weight more easily, their hair and skin are dry and rough in nature, their nails are thin and very brittle, veins are prominent on their body parts, their voice is hoarse and not clear, they generally speak fast missing some words. Their body perspires less, they walk  fast with long strides, during walking or work out their joints create noise (Crepts),they sleep less and are very active in nature, they frequently make hand gestures , move legs, lips, tongue, eyebrows and shoulders , Vata predominant individuals can talk endlessly on different kinds of topics, they are very creative, They initiate very quickly on any work project but also can get bored of that work quickly , they grasp things very quickly and also forget  things quickly, their short term memory is very good but long term memory is comparatively weak, they are easy to please as they become happy in small things, they can also become sad for trivial matters, They dream a lot during sleep and they tend to have dreams of falling, climbing, flying or any other adventure but they often fail to recall their dreams, Their digestive power is irregular, their bowel movements are very irregular and they are frequently constipated, their hunger and thirst are irregular, they desire sweet, sour and salty foods more, their diet is also very irregular Read more


The impact of suppressing natural urges on general health is a unique concept given by Ayurveda. Most of us have suppressed our natural urges at some point in our life due to work commitment, social etiquettes or unavailability of rest rooms, but if it becomes a regular habit then it may lead to serious health issues.

What are natural urges or Vegas

Natural physical urges can be described as nervous impulses generated by body. These are signals send by body when it requires food, water, rest or throwing out of waste products. Urges can also be mentally related in the form of thoughts, frustration, anger etc. The term “Vegdharana” is used in Ayurveda for suppressing natural urges of body. Habitual suppression of vegas can lead to aggravation of vata dosha in body causing nervine disorders. Non suppressible urges There are 13 types of natural urges which should not be suppressed by healthy individuals:-

1. Urge for urination – The body excretes water soluble waste products like urea, creatinine though urine. Kidney filtrate the blood and removes the waste particles in the form of urine from body. It is also important for maintaining water and salt balance in the body. Regular habit of holding urine may lead to sedimentation of waste particles in bladder which can be absorbed back in body leading to various diseases. Consequences of suppressing urge for urination habitually are:- pain in pelvic region, abdominal distension, burning micturition, headache and stone formation.

2. Urge for defecation – The assimilation of food nutrients in body and formation of waste products occur in the intestines. The intestines contract and relax through nervous stimulation which pushes the food particles forward and waste products out from the body as well. If the urge to defecate is suppressed, it leads to suppression of nervous stimulation which will decrease the intestinal motility and also may lead to absorption of waste products back in body. Consequences of suppressing urge to defecate are:- Pain in abdomen, Headache, Difficulty in passing flatus and feces, pain in calf muscles, gas formation and abdominal distension.

3. Suppressing seminal discharge – In males, during the heightened sexual stimulation, the body ejaculates a fluid composed of sperms and other secretions which is called as semen. Many individuals try to suppress the ejaculation in order to increase the time duration of sexual arousal, which may lead to weakening of nerves and reduced blood supply in genital organs. Consequences of suppressing urge for ejaculation are:- Pain in genital organs, Bodyache, Chest pain, Difficulty in urination, Pre mature ejaculation.

4. Suppression of flatus – During digestion process in the intestines, various bacteria act on the food particles and lead to its fermentation, as a result various gases are produced in the small amounts. If food stays for longer periods in large intestines then more amount of gases are produced which are released through anal route in the form of flatus. Consequences of suppressing flatus in the body can lead to:- Abdominal distension, difficulty in defecation or urination, pain in abdomen, headache, difficulty in breathing.

5. Suppression of vomiting – When contents of stomach are forcefully ejected through mouth then it is called as vomiting. Vomiting is a reflex through which stomach clears itself from harmful toxins and poisons. Recurrent vomiting should be treated as it may lead to dehydration, esophagitis or tear in esophagus. However if vomiting occurs once in a while, it is advisable not to control the impulse. Consequences of suppressing urge to vomit are :- Urticaria, Decreased appetite, hyper pigmentation in skin, swelling in any part of body, fever, skin diseases, nauseating feeling, inflammatory disorders in body.

6. Suppression of Sneezing – A sneeze is an involuntary expulsion of air from nose and mouth. When the sensitive mucus membrane of nose or throat is irritated, a mucus containing irritants are expelled out in the form of sneeze. Recurrent sneezing may be caused due to various allergens, cold or flu, dust, use of nasal sprays or due to any drug. Consequences of suppressing sneezing are:- Headache, Weakness of facial muscles, Diseases related to eyes, nose and throat.

7. Suppression of yawning – Yawning is an involuntary reflex which consists of wide opening of mouth and jaw along with deep inhalation of air followed by short exhalation. There are various theories regarding causes of yawning like improving alertness, improving the air circulation of brain, regulating the brain temperature and maintaining the ear pressure. Consequences of suppressing Yawning are:- Vata Dosha Aggravation, paralysis, Tremors in body.

8. Suppression of Hunger – Hunger is a physiological signal which signifies the need of body for food. The reflex of hunger is regulated by nervous signals, hormonal signals, signals from blood levels of glucose, protein and fat in blood. Consequences of suppressing Hunger are: – malnutrition, weakness, bodyache, decreased appetite, giddiness.

Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a very commonly found mental health disorder that can be described as having persistently low mood, feeling of sadness and loss of interest in day to day activities.
Almost all of us have our blue days when we feel low or sad but if this feeling persists for weeks or months then it comes under the category of depression.
Fortunately depression is the most easily treatable mental disorder; therefore if depression seems to control you and keeping you away from living normal life, don’t hesitate to take proper healthcare advice.
There is no exact cause for depression; many factors can contribute for onset of depression like changes in hormonal levels in body, family history of major depressive disorder, chronic medical illness, stress, grief, substance abuse, seasonal changes, postpartum depression, etc.
The above mentioned factors alone or in combination cause alteration in neurochemicals in brain that lead to many symptoms of depression.

Signs and symptoms of depression are not specific for everyone and differ from person to person. Patients may not necessarily exhibit all symptoms of depression.
Clinical features which come under depression are :
1.    Feeling of sadness, hopelessness
2.    Feeling of guilt
3.    Extreme moody behavior sometimes with angry outbursts
4.    Loss of interest in friends, family, hobbies and daily activities
5.    Low concentration power and trouble in making decisions
6.    Thoughts of harming yourself/Suicidal thoughts
7.    Feeling of tiredness all time
8.    Sleeping too little or / excessive sleeping
9.    Unexplained weight loss or weight gain
10.    Changes in appetite
11.    Unexplained aches or pains in whole or part of a body.
12.    False beliefs/delusions
Sometimes Depression may be associated with episodes of abnormally elated mood and energized behavior which is then called as bipolar disorder

In Ayurveda  all sorts of mental illnesses are mentioned under a broad term disease known as “Unmada”. Ayurveda describes Unmada as impairment of nine entities which are – Mana(feelings), Budhhi (intelligence), Chetna (alertness), Gyan (Knowledge), Smriti (memory), Bhakti (interest), Sheela (Character), Chesta (Physical activity), Aachar (conduct).
Dysfunction in one or more of above mentioned entities lead to signs and symptoms of Unmada
Causes of Unmada according to Ayurvedic literatures include – intake of incompatible diet, contaminated diet, insult towards teachers and elders, spiritual causes, mental shock, excessive fear, greed, attachment, grief, etc,
The above mentioned causes lead to aggravation of Doshas (Vata,Pitta or Kapha) in Hridaya. (Hridaya here can be taken as parts of brain related to thinking, emotions and cognition) and manovahi srotasa (Channels or neurotransmittors responsible for communication of brain with body) leading to “Unmada”.
Unmada has been classified into five types – Vataja, Pittaja, Kaphaja, Sannipataja (combination of all three doshas) and Agantuja (Due to external sources like substance abuse, intoxication or poison).
Depression can be correlated with Kaphaja Unmada due to resemblance in clinical features.
In Ayurvedic literatures term “Mano – avsada” has also been mentioned in different places which is also related to Depression.

Prodromal symptoms
In Ayurveda prodromal symptoms are mentioned for “Unmada”, which are also commonly seen in cases of depression like loss of enthusiasm in any activity, loss of interest in food or meals, having bad dreams, palpitations which are described as “ghabrahat” in hindi by patient.
Clinical features of Kaphaja and Vataja Unmada are similar to depression like loss of lustre, weakness, fatigue, irrelevant body gestures, absent mindedness, decreased digestive power, impaired thought, preferring to be alone, talking very less from usual, excessive or less sleep.


No two people are affected the same way by depression and therefore treatment method can differ from one patient to another. In Ayurveda treatment for depression includes three regimen
1)    Satvavjaya (Psychiatric counseling)
2)    Drugs
3)    Panchkarma therapies

1.    Satvavjaya treatment includes understanding the psyche of the patient, building the rapport with the patient, resolving the false beliefs or providing the solution to the problems,reassurance and providing motivation for coming out through the situation.
2.    Medicines – Medicines are given when psychiatric counseling alone is not suffiecient. Medicinal part includes use of deepana pachana herbs as Agni status in case of depression is very low, use of herbs having Vata Kapha dosha balancing properties along with neuroprotective functions  –  for eg – Vacha (Acorus calamus), Jyotishmati (celastrus panniculatus), , Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Ajmoda (Carum bulbocastanum).
lack of strength or fatigue is present then use of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is very benficial.
In cases of anxiety or bipolar mood disorders use ofJatamansi (Nordostachys jatamansi) and Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) is very effective.

3.    Panchakarma modalities are adopted according to the condition of the patient. One Panchkarma therapy called as virechana (Therapeutic purgation) helps in improving the Agni status of body and also helps in detoxifying the body. Another Panchakarma very commonly used in such cases is called as Nasya in which medicine is admistered through nostrils,the administered medicinal formulation helps in improving the functioning and relaxing the brain.

Some lifestyle modifications which should be done on patient’s end include –

1.    Always be grateful for the good things in life and avoid unnecessary negative thoughts.
2.    Waking up early – our brain releases certain hormones in circadian rhythm (Day- night pattern) which are disturbed by habit of waking up late. Therefore for having fully functional brain and undisturbed hormonal functions one should wake up early. It also helps in medicines to work faster.
3.    Exercise – Exercising has been studied to improve serotonin levels in brain which helps us in feeling happy and active. It also helps in improving self-confidence. Daily habit of walking/ jogging/swimming or any outdoor sport should be cultivated.
4.    Diet – Drink 3- 4 litres of water, eat lots of vegetables and food and avoid excessive salty and spicy foods.
Some specific food items which should be included in diet are walnuts, almonds,apricots, sprouts, wheat germ, tomato, flaxseeds, Berries, Fish, Mushrooms and Green tea.

5.    Yoga poses like Sarvangasana, Halasana, Vrikshasana, Shirsasana, Simhasana and pranayama helps in improving the blood circulation towards brain which in turn causes improved concentration power, relaxation of mind, controlling the emotions and correction of thought process.
